Faith: Pianist Headshot Session and Some Misc Info on How I Do Things
October 20, 2014
My brother helpfully sent the lovely Faith, another piano performance major at George Mason, my way for concert program headshots with a requested fast turnaround time (not unusual). I was able to power through all 35 of my selected favorites and deliver Faith her headshots the same night as the shoot! *Pats self on back*
The dry but necessary deets: What I generally tell headshot clients is to wear simple, relatively form-fitting clothing and just a bit more makeup than you would normally. For girls, this can mean anything at all, but at bare minimum you need a base layer of foundation, lip color, and mascara. For guys, you have got to at least put on some chapstick, and I also might powder you, so be prepared. Why? So I don't have to spend hours photoshopping your face. Our cameras these days pick up every tiny flaw that might detract from the overall look and feel of your picture. For commercial and musical theatre work, I've been told a colorful, happy photo is what you're going for, so you may need more bright makeup for those, like noticeable lip color and blush. More is generally better when you're getting your picture taken.
With musicians, I think the perfect headshot conveys simplicity and sophistication, with an uncomplicated color palette and soft lighting. Faith and I shut ourselves into a practice room with white walls and ceiling, so that last part wasn't a problem. She resourcefully brought along a few accessories to change it up - beginning with the sweater, then switching between a couple of simple scarves, all over a base of black. Scarves and sweaters are a great way to easily change your whole look.
